55 Rules For Love – Rule #11 – Admit When You Are Wrong, Quickly

Admitting I’m wrong isn’t always easy.

Well, sometimes it is easy to be quick in my apology because it’s very evident I’m wrong.

Other times, I’m feeling pretty darn sure I’m right, I’m 100% correct, and that what I’ve said was appropriate or I have seen the situation in the proper light of day.

Quickly is the Key Word

Ego.

Pride.

These are the driving energies behind my unwillingness to yield, to quickly admit I’m wrong. Usually embarrassment plays a part as well.

But I ALWAYS know, deep down, that something I’ve said or done wasn’t right.

The faster I own up and apologize, the easier it is for life to return to normal.

How the Apology is Accepted Matters

When I admit I’m wrong, how my husband Michael receives it plays a part as well. I’d like to think that how he accepts my apology doesn’t matter, but it does. If he’s a total butthead and says “I told you so!” or something along those lines, then I immediately regret my vulnerability, my heartfelt action of sincere apology.

How the Apology is Given, Matters Too

How I apologize also counts. Big time. If I’m not sincere and heartfelt, but a total butthead and apologize in a begrudging, mocking manner – just to get this awkward situation out of the way and call it done – or apologize just because Michael thinks I owe him one – then the apology doesn’t count.

I have to mean what I say, and have a total understanding of why I was wrong. A sincere, heartfelt apology, in my opinion, includes a deeper understanding of how my actions or words hurt Michael, along with a description of how I could have handled the situation differently.

Sophisticated Ingredients

Maturity, emotional intelligence, grace, compassion, empathy and acceptance… these sophisticated ingredients can result in an apology becoming a beautiful moment of emotional connection and closeness between us.

Love isn’t always an easy journey.

But, it sure is worth it…..

S, 💚
