Beautiful Rainbow Over Mockingee Lake

Story Behind the Picture

I was kayaking with a friend on Mockingee Lake during a Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia (CKNS) Ladies Night Paddle. The weather was bordering on rain as the light grey clouds turned into menacing, darker ones. The rain soon started and winds picked up as we made our way back to the boat launch. Our paddling speed also picked up as we pushed into the wind that seemed to have suddenly changed direction, while keeping our ears open for thunder. (Never underestimate the power of weather on a lake when paddling! Always be prepared!)

There was this fantastic moment when the setting sun broke through the ominous clouds, illuminating the top of the mountain beyond the lake. I shouted out to my friend Heather to stop for a bit so I could take a picture of this beautiful scene, with her in it.

Just as Heather heard me and stopped paddling, this brilliant rainbow suddenly appeared! We were blown away! It was magical as its vibrant colors contrasted against the gloomy clouds.

The arch of the rainbow is mildly distorted because I was too fast while moving my phone’s camera in panoramic mode as I captured this fantastic moment.
