Happy New Year!
Michael and I started the first day of 2021 with lots of fresh air, great conversation and the joy of being outside as we hiked 6.5km to Cape Split!
The Drive – Blomidon Look-off
Our drive to Cape Split took us through the historic Acadian Wellington Dyke then up along the North Mountain with the Blomidon Look-off. This look-off has a fantastic view of five counties within Annapolis Valley.
Google Map View of Cape Split
This trail’s unique ending is a cliff point, with a harsh drop-off and “split” of rock beyond the point. I’ve included two screen shots from Google Maps – to show the unique location of this hike.
Pictures Along the Trail
Cape Split
The 6.5km trail is a moderately easy hike, but it is long. Upon reaching the end point, it is recommended to keep dogs on their leash, as dogs have gone over the cliff’s edge and died.
The panoramic picture below is your first view of Cape Split. From this location, there are fantastic views of The Bay of Fundy and the Minus Basin.
It was exceptionally windy this day, and very cold. We stood for a few minutes, took in the view, then turned around to make our way back to the trail head.
Bahrain’s “Tree of Life” & Cape Split’s “Tree of Life”
Along the trail is a crazy tree that reminded us of the Tree of Life, in Bahrain. Bahrain’s Tree of Life is a Prosopis cineraria tree, dated to be over 400 years old and located in the Arabian Desert. This ancient and mythical tree’s matrix of sprawling branches is very similar to the crazy tree along Cape Split’s trail.
We decided to call this unique tree along Cape Split’s trail after the Tree of Life in Bahrain!

What an absolutely stunning place!! I love your photos! It sounds like a nice way to start the new year…much more energetic than me, I’ve been sat on the sofa most of the afternoon being very lazy and making the most of the last few days of my hols! Happy New Year to you both!
PS your mention of the tree of life brings back nice memories for me. I remember going to visit it many moons ago, when we lived there 🙂 It was such an oddity!
I know! This large, beautiful tree in the middle of the vast, dry desert! It is something to see!
Happy New Year to you, too!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Taking time to rest before heading back into the back-to-work routine is necessary, so you can feel rested! Today, I’m not traveling very far from our sofa! I’m back to work tomorrow. Next break is in March!!!
Me too! It seems very far away at the moment, but i’m sure it will roll around quickly. I hope your first day back at work goes well!
