55 Rules For Love – Rule #28 – Trust Your Instincts, But Don’t Be Paranoid

Took me a long time…

…to trust my instincts because I didn’t trust that I could properly interpret what my instincts were telling me; my own issues were in the way.

My lenses were worst case scenario at all times – he’s cheating. He’s hiding something. He can’t be trusted. I grew up believing men cheated on women because my biological father cheated on my mother – whom my mother divorced.

Trust

Is earned, starting with myself. It took a lot of work on myself: recognizing my personal values, and making decisions each day to honor my personal values – that I learned I could trust myself to take care of myself. This allowed me space to hear what my instincts had to say about my husband – free from my fear-based lenses of “he’s cheating”.

Don’t Be Paranoid = Having Faith

Faith in another person is to have complete trust and confidence in them; to believe what we cannot see so we can believe what we see.

Paranoid is to see what I want to see, because when I’m paranoid I’ll interpret everything into the proof I’m looking for.

Discerning the difference between paranoia and faith… is trust.

Be Fully Present

Only by having space to clearly hear what my instincts have to say about my husband, will I truly be present to him – and understand his subtle nuances that aren’t easily communicated – deepening our emotional connection.
