When we first arrived to our rented fishing cabin in Hecate Cove, our neighbour – a resident of the cove, told us to be careful – a large black bear was frequenting the apple trees in the area.
This large, rather fat black bear made two appearances, that we were aware of, to climb the apple trees behind the fishing cabin and eat its apples!!
His First Appearance!
This was rather startling, as we were going back and forth from the boat, unloading it after our first fishing run. Then, there he was – rather shocked at us as we were shocked at him!
This was the closest I’d ever been to a bear in the wild. I was grateful to be on the back step of the cabin while taking these pictures, as I could quickly retreat into the cabin for safety.
He (I’m not sure if this bear is a male or female) was vocal – making grunting sounds at us, perhaps to warn us to keep our distance.
He crawled up the tree, ate bunch of apples, then made his way down and slowly disappeared into the woods.
Hear Him Growling at Us
You can hear him growl near the end of this short video clip. He sorta sounds like Chewbacca, from Star Wars!
His Second Appearance – With Some Jumping Fun!
This was during the last full day of our fishing trip. We spent the late afternoon relaxing at the cabin as the fish weren’t biting this day. I had been keeping my eye out for the bear, and was thrilled when he showed up!
This time, he was less vocal and didn’t seem to mind us. We kept a safe distance as we all gathered and watched him. He seemed to put on show for us as he jumped from one tree to the other!
After his jump, he looked at us, then decided to leave along the same path he exited during his first visit.
Next Stop – The Neighbour’s Apple Trees!
The black bear made his way next door, up into the apples trees lining the neighbour’s property! The trees were shaking as the bear climbed all through them, eating apples!
This black bear, for me, was a high point of our fishing trip!

Glad you were in the back step of the cabin… near a door when I heard the growl! 🍎🍏 Great recap & video. 💜
Thanks mama!!!! 🐻🐻🌻💛
We didn’t realize until we moved to Golden what good climbers black bears are. Great shots of the tree jumper!
Thank you!! 🐻
