Fishing Trip Part I – Port Alice, Vancouver Island, British Columbia – The Wild West Coast of Canada – Launch from Rumble Beach Marina

Port Alice, Vancouver Island

Port Alice is known as the Gateway to the Wild West Coast and Sea Otter Capital of Canada! Port Alice is one of the most northern settlements on Vancouver Island.

Michael and I were invited to come along fishing with another couple, who are fishing enthusiasts. We drove from Campbell River, along the North Island Route to Port Alice Rd, a 3 hour drive – give or take – as we were hauling a boat.

Scenic Drive

The drive was scenic as we wove our way through the mountains. There is an absence of human settlements along this drive – we truly were heading into the northern wild, wild west! There are plenty of rest stops, with public toilets and picnic tables for weary travelers. It was at one of these rest stops I took this mountain picture! Sasquatch may be native to the B.C. Kootenays, but it is easy to imagine this legendary creature can also be at home here in these remote island mountains!

Rumble Beach Marina

We arrived in the small village of Port Alice, and launched from Rumble Beach Marina. The weather and water conditions were perfect as we headed out of Neroutsos Inlet.

Our Destination – Hecate Cove, Quatsino Sound

We rented a friend of a friend’s fishing cabin for three nights, located in Hecate Cove within the Quatsino Sound. Quatsino Sound is the northernmost sound of the five located along the west coast of Vancouver Island. We truly were in the wild, wild west!
