Martock Ski Hill – Learning to Snowboard – Lesson V

Pre-Lesson Warm-Up

What a beautiful, refreshing day it was to be out and active!! The temperatures were mild with a clear-blue, sunny sky! Newbie mistake – I placed my board upside down when I went to the clubhouse to pay for my lesson!!! Do’h!!! Always learning, I am!! I had three successful heel edge pendulum runs before my lesson, including my starting to feel more comfortable on my board!! Woohoo!!!

Sliding Turns

My usual instructor Scott was out with injury, he was replaced with a “follow the rules” instructor who asked me not to mention his name as there is not one identified picture of him on the internet! So I will call him Instructor X! LOL!!!

Instructor X knows his snowboarding and the importance of the small details for correct technique and avoiding bad habits.

We reviewed traverse techniques of heel edge pendulum and toe edge pendulum. We moved into sliding turns – a technique Scott introduced me to during Lesson IV that scared me because I felt out of control.

Instructor X ran along side me as I:

  • Maintained control with heel edge traversing to then…
  • Apply more pressure on my back foot as my board falls straight
  • Apply equal distribution of weight on both feet – no edge
  • Get some speed
  • With an all-in-one action – using hips (leading hip turning), knees and ankles up, toes down to transfer to toe edge – engage core to help control speed
  • Immediately follow with head looking in direction I’m going, with shoulders aligned with where I’m looking
  • Continue traversing on toe edge
  • Apply more pressure on back foot as my board falls straight
  • Apply equal distribution of weight on both feet – no edge
  • Get some controlled speed
  • With an all-in-one action – using hips (leading hip turning), knee (leading knee pushing out) and ankles down, toes up to transfer to heel edge – engage core to help control speed
  • Immediately follow with head looking in direction I’m going, with shoulders aligned with where I’m looking
  • Continue traversing on heel edge
  • Repeat to toe edge

I hope I described this correctly!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Thank you Instructor X!! LOL!!!

Woohoo!!!!

S, 🙂
