Martock Ski Hill – Learning to Snowboard – Lesson IV

Review What I Know

Pendulum Heel Edge:
  • Weight on heel edge, knees bent – relaxed.
  • Start with straight down – heel edge – equal weight in both heels
  • Start left
  • Slightly more weight on left heel
  • Head – looking left – in the direction I want to go, left shoulder and left hip in line with riding left
  • Right shoulder is back – shoulders are straight, relaxed
  • Speed under control – relaxed
  • Transition to other foot, other direction
  • Heel down straight – equal pressure on both heels
  • More pressure on right heel
  • Head – looking right – in the direction I want to go, right shoulder and right hip in line with riding right
  • Left shoulder is back – shoulders are straight, relaxed
  • Speed under control – relaxed
Pendulum Toe Edge

This, I’m not so sure of yet. I have not been able to practice this without the support of an instructor.

Pre-Lesson Martock Breakfast

I enjoyed breakfast in the clubhouse before my practice run and lesson; 2 eggs over easy, rye and herb toast, no hash browns, extra bacon – crispy!

Pre-Lesson Warm Up

I had three runs of pendulum on my heel edge on the Bunny Hill. I was successful with this, but on my third run, fell hard on my butt at the bottom of the wee hill. It was my first really hard fall! It scared me a bit. Ps….note to self… don’t eat a big breakfast then try and bend over to do up my bindings…. LOL!!!!

Lesson IV Begins – The T-Bar

This was a DISASTER!!! I fell three times on my own. I kept leaning back too far. The instructions were to stand straight, arms holding the bar like I’m giving a speech and let the bar pull me – with very little weight on my board! Finally, 4th attempt – my instructor Scott rode with me – holding me steady along the way.

We rode up a bit – can’t say I know what part of the hill as I’ve not yet been on it or to the top. Based on the picture of the hill below, I’d say two mini slopes of the way up? Does that make sense? The T-Bar is up the middle of these main slopes. We exited left.

My exit off of the T-Bar was very ungraceful! I almost crashed into the woods! I was finally able to get my bearings and had a successful pendulum on my heel edge ride down to the bottom of the hill!

Scott decided it was time for me to try speed! It was back to the Bunny Hill!!

Flat Base – Speed – Open to Heels – Flat Base – Speed – Open to Toes

Yeah, right!!! This was SCARY!!!!

This was facing my board straight down the Bunny Hill with a flat base, get speed to then turn to my heel edge and stop. This felt out of control and I wiped out hard many times. Scott’s logic behind this strategy was telling my body that yes this is scary, but you will get over it. I didn’t get over it and asked to slow it down! 😉

Scott then helped me break the technique down into smaller steps.

  • Flat base – but I’m angled with the hill (still learning this)
  • Leading knee bends out with hip and upper body starting to follow – gaining control
  • As I then open to heel edge
  • Engage my core muscles for control
  • Slow to a stop

Got that!! I sure don’t!!! Because opening to toe edge was next! Scott basically held my hand during this entire lesson!

After the lesson, Scott completely realigned my bindings for me, making them of equal placement and a closer since (I think?)! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Thank you Scott!!

Woohoo!!!!

S, 🙂

We are home now, arrived about an hour ago.
Now need to unpack and do so many other things.
It’s a bit of a letdown to be back home but our boy Hank is quite happy as the first thing he did was roll in the snow in the backyard, 🙂
I wanted to join Hank but it was much too cold! Ha, ha!
Hope you are rested from your snowboard lesson.
Have a great rest of your day, Stephanie.
