I’d never heard of the burger franchise Five Guys until one opened recently at Doha Festival City Mall. And, it seems shame on me for not knowing, as a woman who was leaving so we could get her table, was shocked at such a thing!
Living in Qatar has exposed me to the world of burger joints, all the more than ever imagined Halifax would be able to offer! Shake Shack, Johnny Rockets, Fuddruckers, Elevation Burger, Duke Burger House, Fatburger, Roger’s Diner….etc…etc…..
Back to Five Guys! So, when this very popular American franchise opened its first restaurant in Qatar this past September, the lineups were over an hour to order! Yesterday, when Michael told me we were going to Five Guys with the gang to eat dinner there, because of its popularity I was looking forward to trying this burger!
Now back in Halifax, my favorite cheeseburger is from the classic, over 70 years old diner Chickenburger Restaurant where my mother used to hang out at when she was a teenager! Their secret? They haven’t changed a thing since they opened! My favorite is their cheeseburger with mayo, mustard and ketchup. Side of onion rings. Vanilla milkshake. Why do I love their burgers? Authentic ingredients and everything is cooked right there in front of you – just as it was 70 years ago!
At Five Guys I order a cheeseburger with mustard, mayo, ketchup, lettuce and tomato. Side of spicy fries. Vanilla milkshake.
The burger was good. I had the single patty. Too much bun maybe. But good. The spicy fries – SPICY. Surprisingly so. I didn’t enjoy them. The vanilla milkshake a bit too sweet and thick for my liking. The bill for both of us (two vanilla milkshakes, one bottle of water, a single patty cheeseburger, a double patty cheeseburger, two small spicy fries) – 170QR. That is about $57.00 Canadian. Worth it? Not so much. But again, food prices are a bit higher here now because of the blockade.
At this point (sorry Melanie!) I prefer my Shack Shack original cheeseburger with cheese fries and vanilla milk shake!!!
